The Great Wall of Los Angeles, a landmark cultural monument, represents the ethnic history of California from pre-Invasion times to the 1950s. Conceived by Judith F. Baca and realized by SPARC. The first half-mile of mural was created by over 400 youths, artists, and community members. Since its inception in 1974, it has evolved with support from major foundations and a significant grant from the Mellon Foundation for its extension. Production is underway which will extend the Great Wall to another half-mile, and picks up in the 1960s. As SPARC furthers the restoration and expansion of the mural, it aims to transform the Great Wall into an international educational and cultural destination.
The World Wall is a pioneering international art project that seeks to inspire a global vision for a future without fear. Created by Judith F. Baca, the World Wall extends the creative and collaborative impulses from the Great Wall. Engaging and bringing together international artists, the arrangement of panels in a circular form transcends traditional exhibition boundaries as the panels speak to one another. To date, artists from Mexico, Canada, Finland, Russia, Israel, and Palestine, have contributed. Premiering in Finland in 1990, it embodies a vision of peace in the future encouraging dialogue and reflection. The international project highlights the role of art in imagining a harmonious society, demonstrating the impactful blend of creativity and activism.
